"Proud and strong were the folk of Andusaria, wise in knowledge and lore of a
sort lost to the mists of time. Great works they built, in the coastal lowlands,
the river valleys, the soaring heights, even unto the very doorstep of the
Mnoethen and their lesser brethren. For nigh unto a millennium Andusaria reigned
supreme in the lands east and west of the towering peaks of the region humans
now call the Innocus Mountains. Then, the mighty realm fell, fading from thought
and memory until 'twas but a softly whispered shadow bespoken in the most aged
of feastfire stories. But that is the way of the Celestial Powers, who, some
sages say, e'er seek new ways to placate the boredom of the immortal spheres.
They test, they prod, they play; but 'tis mortal folk who must shoulder the true
burden, for 'tis mortal folk whose conflicts hath e'er personified the willful
defiance of one Celestial 'gainst another. Clever and patient are those of
divine stature, using what tools they may in their unending contest - e'en
tribulations long forgotten by the Realms of Western Glashia. What is a millennium or
two to those free from time's passage?"
- Perimedes of Caurgil Keep, adviser to
the court of Lord Brant and the Lords Alliance -

Mystery of the Malgwaith is a medieval fantasy PBeM game set within the
confines of a portion of the Innocus Mountains, specifically a series of
interconnected valleys which make up what humans refer to as Hartshorne Pass,
connecting the Kingdom of Langington west of the towering peaks with the
Josurrian Reach, those lands which lie east of the mighty highland range. It is
a time and place where intrigue may prove as dangerous as more mundane perils,
where long-kept secrets that once toppled mighty realms may be rising again,
where those who seek their own brand of truth may find instead a deeper design
to their actions.

This game is played using TSR's AD&D gaming system. Characters are submitted
using 1st or 2nd Edition Player's Handbooktm guidelines based on 78+1d4 points for
attributes. Accepted submissions then are adapted by the gamemaster troupe to
the TSR Player's Option system as modified by certain House rules. Priests and
Wizards are created using "PO: Spells & Magic" guidelines. All other character
classes are created using "PO: Skills & Powers." Attributes rather than
sub-abilities are used, with attributes falling between 8 and 18. For each
attribute score of 15 or greater, one corresponding attribute must number 9 to
12. Any character possessing a perfect 18 attribute score suffers a -4 penalty
from the original allotment of total points allowed.
Each submission must include a background narrative and novel-like vignette
showcasing character development, with numerical attributes mirroring the
capabilities showcased in story form. Mystery of the Malgwaith is very much an
extemporaneous drama, with player characters the "actors" in the ongoing story.
Thus, game emphasis is placed on role-playing ability. All characters must
conform to one of the following alignments: LG, LN, NG, N, CG. No evil aligned
characters will be allowed. Additional House rules will be explained to players
during the course of the character creation phase and the game itself.
Posts are made Monday - Friday, and must be made in normal narrative form: third
person, past tense. Players may post no more than twice a day. Each player may
control the actions and dialogue of his or her character only. Non-combat posts
are made to the gamemaster site and to each character interacting with the
character for whom the post is sent. Thus, conversations can move along fairly
quickly, as they require less gamemaster oversight. Combat posts are made to the
gamemaster site only, as these types of posts require extensive gamemaster
oversight. All posts should have [Malg] in the subject line along with any
appropriate story thread, i.e. "[Malg] Planning - Ysoltre" or "[Malg] Planning -
Hroknar."
Mystery of the Malgwaith was the brainchild of Donald Stotts, with the
approval of fellow conspirator Robb Farrell - who as a player and gamemaster,
respectively, of the now-defunct The Seven Orbs of Ballesteros PBeM campaign
have more than a passing familiarity with the Glashian realms.
Be aware that a troupe-style game actually has several gamemasters, working
together to create a challenging, interesting experience for the players. The
tone of the Malgwaith game was created by Stotts, who also set up a blueprint
for generating adventures within the game context - massive lists for creating
dungeon, village, or outdoor adventures balanced for a party of "adventurers"
traveling through the Malgwaith region - that fit into the overall milieu.
Stotts then acts as chief scribe and resident Idiot Savant, working with the
gamemaster trainees in putting forth an entertaining and challenging game for
participating players.
For Stotts, who was asked by several one-time players to instruct them on how to
run a game effectively, Mystery of the Malgwaith represents an opportunity to
do just that in an entertaining setting while helping out old pal Robb in the
latter's desire to expand the Western Glashia campaign world. Most of all, since
Stotts has no idea what the specific individual adventuring sites will hold for
the party of adventurers (the gamemasters having way too many possibilties to
choose from), he can take a player as well if desired (indeed, he was informed
that he would and was told to adapt a specific character he currently plays in
another PBeM game; real scary, that demand - can we say "set-up"?).
Thus, the current Mystery of the Malgwaith game has individuals involved in
both face-to-face and computer-interlink modes. The final product hopefully not
only will be a fun time had by all, but will provide Robb Farrell with a
fully-fleshed narrative story that can be used to showcase to potential participants and Internet browsers what an adventure within Western Glashia is
all about.
